Content: “Bibek Chand and Lukas K. Danner take the reader through the current state of EU-Asia relations, with a natural focus on China, encompassing all relevant topics from trade to foreign policy and social issues. The editors offer an up-to-date analysis, making this volume a must-read for anyone interested in contemporary international politics.” —Angela Stanzel, Associate, Asia Division, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Germany “This book focuses on too-often neglected, but important inter-regional interactions between Europe and Asia. The book is informative and timely, given the growing Europe-Asia interactions and cooperation in the context of the changing global strategic environment caused by the rise of China and the uncertainty of the United States. It provides comprehensive perspectives on Europe-Asia relations and contributes to deepening our understanding of strategic dynamics of the inter-regional relations, particularly in the age of COVID-19.” —Kei Koga, Assistant Professor, National University of Singapore, Singapore “A timely, thorough, and comprehensive analysis of European-Asian Relations, that will enhance current debates and set the stage for future studies on the subject. It is an essential-read for scholars and students in both European Studies and Asian Studies.” —Emil Kirchner, Jean Monnet Professor, University of Essex, UK This edited volume analyzes the increasingly important political interactions between Europe—primarily the EU—and Asia within the context of two recent global trends: the rise of China and the withdrawal of the U.S. from multilateral commitments. In an age of receding American leadership and reduced commitments to its European allies, the EU and its member states have become more open to seeking and considering new partnerships, while the rising economic prowess of Asia has made it of particular interest for Europe. This book highlights these dynamics within European-Asian international relations in eleven comprehensive chapters. Bibek Chand is Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at the University of North Georgia, USA. Lukas K. Danner is Fulbright-NSF Arctic Research Scholar at the University of Iceland, and Research Associate at Florida International University, USA.

Content: This book critically reviews state-religion models and the ways in which different countries manage religious diversity, illuminating different responses to the challenges encountered in accommodating both majorities and minorities. The country cases encompass eight world regions and 23 countries, offering a wealth of research material suitable to support comparative research. Each case is analysed in depth looking at historical trends, current practices, policies, legal norms and institutions. By looking into state-religion relations and governance of religious diversity in regions beyond Europe, we gain insights into predominantly Muslim countries (Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia), countries with pronounced historical religious diversity (India and Lebanon) and into a predominantly migrant pluralist nation (Australia). These insights can provide a basis for re-thinking European models and learning from experiences of governing religious diversity in other socio-economic and geopolitical contexts. Key analytical and comparative reflections inform the introduction and concluding chapters. This volume offers a research and study companion to better understand the connection between state-religion relations and the governance of religious diversity in order to inform both policy and research efforts in accommodating religious diversity. Given its accessible language and further readings provided in each chapter, the volume is ideally suited for undergraduate and graduate students. It will also be a valuable resource for researchers working in the wider field of ethnic, migration, religion and citizenship studies

A declaration of love for Germany by the Jewish author Lena Gorelik in her semi-autobiographical text “Dear Mischa” (2011) poses the question whether the Holocaust is still the point of reference and central characteristic of self-conception of the contemporary or third generation of Jewish writers in Germany after 1945. In addition to Gorelik’s text, the study analyzes Katja Petrowskaja’s “Maybe Esther” (2014) and Olga Grjasnowa’s “All Russians Love Birch Trees” (2012). This third generation of authors, publishing after 2010, is part of the ‘new’ German Jewry, composed mainly of immigrants from the former Soviet Union and their children – a fact which significantly influences contemporary Jewish identity in Germany: The analysis of the literary identities, which the authors constructed for their protagonists, sheds light on current trends in contemporary Jewish life in Germany and demonstrates that these ‘new’ Jews from the East reject the special status assigned to them as ‘victims of the Holocaust’ or ‘exotic’ outsiders. Instead the authors voice the desire for ‘normalization’ in the German-Jewish relationship in their autofictional texts.

Content: This open access book provides an in-depth look into the background of rule of law problems and the open defiance of EU law in East Central European countries. Current illiberal trends and anti-EU politics have the potential to undermine mutual trust between member states and fundamentally change the EU. It is therefore crucial to understand their domestic causes, context conditions, specific processes and consequences. This volume contributes to empirically informed theory-building and includes contributions from researchers from various disciplines and multiple perspectives on illiberal trends and anti-EU politics in the region. The qualitative case studies, comparative works and quantitative analyses provide a comprehensive picture of current societal, political and institutional developments in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. Through studying similarities and differences between East Central European and other EU countries, the chapters also explore whether there are regional patterns of democracy- and EU-related problems. Astrid Lorenz is Professor of the Political System of Germany and Politics in Europe in the Institute of Political Science at Leipzig University, Germany. Lisa H. Anders is a researcher in the Institute for Political Science at Leipzig University, Germany.
