Chapter 1 discusses technical terms (comparison, grouping, criticism, complementarity) and their applicability. Chapter 2 discusses horizontal and vertical determination of framechords in terms of ten diagnostic procedures, giving examples of each; describes eight conditions under which tones may enter the musical imagination (even if they are not sounding tones); and offers five reasons, together with examples, for the possibility that more than one analysis of a piece may be satisfactory. Chapter 3 demonstrates the voice-leading elements in music from Augustine to the rise of atonality.
