In September 1973 a horrified French public discovered Latin American militarism in the unexpected form of terrorism in Chile. Even people on the left had been largely indifferent to the massacres in Djakarta, but so much had been said, pro and con, about the via Chilena in France that attempts were hastily made to exorcise this coup d'état that was not unusual but yet was different from what had happened in other countries. The dark continent-wide tide of a praetorianism that was novel only in its date and manner of execution ended by confirming our earlier views. We came to terms with the intolerable through a few simple ideas. The involvement of the International Telephone and Telegraph Company (ITT) obscured the vast number of underlying, more fundamental causes.
