This revised and updated new edition has entailed a thorough re-writing of the text to take account of the impressive advances that have been made in all aspects of earth sciences, particularly mineralogy, over recent years. The organization of the text and treatment of the subject remains the same with each of the common minerals of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks being discussed in terms of structure, chemistry, optical and physical properties, distinguishing features and paragenesis. Quantitative and qualitative correlations between the various aspects of mineralogy are shown wherever possible to provide a scientific understanding of minerals as well as their description and identification. Tabulated data and optic orientation sketches at the head of each section aim to make identification of each mineral clear and accessible. For this new edition the tabulations include unit cell parameters, and reflectances and Vickers hardness for opaque minerals. Selected references illustrate the different approaches to the study of minerals and include review publications of particular mineral groups.
