Dentro de la antropología existen muchas teorías que giran alrededor del origen, del contexto, del significado, de la función y de las características de lo que es un ritual. En un sentido más estricto son el carácter de la acción, una codificación del procedimiento y su efecto de cambio que distinguen un ritual religioso de otros rituales y de otras actividades de la vida cultural. El presente artículo toma estas características para discutir un ritual organizado artificialmente y realizado fuera de regla por un chaman indígena emberá en una comunidad de la población negra del Chocó (Colombia). Analizando el ritual desde diferentes perspectivas se llega a la conclusión que tanto el control sobre el procedimiento establecido como su ruptura forman parte del ritual, el mismo que se basa en la identidad y personalidad del chamán que lo efectúa.

Within anthropology there are a variety of theories regarding the origin, context, significance, function and character of what is considered to be a ritual. In a stricter sense, it is its quality of action, a certain codification of the procedure and the effects of changing what distinguishes a religious ritual from other rituals and activities in cultural life. The present article takes these distinctive features for discussing a ritual that has been organized artificially and performed irregularly by a shaman of the Emberá Indians within a community of black people in the Chocó (Colombia). Analysing the ritual from different perspectives the article comes to the conclusion that the control over the established procedure and its break as well are integral parts of the ritual itself, which is based on the identity and personality of the shaman who performs it.
