El trabajo aborda el surgimiento de la Educación Intercultural Bilingüe en Chile desde una perspectiva histórica y sociológica, y analiza las posibilidades del programa que el Estado chileno actualmente implementa en esta materia, de contribuir a una ampliación de oportunidades para los educandos indígenas. Mediante la discusión de una serie de aspectos se pretende mostrar que esta política educacional, al enfocarse exclusivamente en educandos indígenas, se autolimita en el alcance de los objetivos que se propone.

The paper deals with the origins of intercultural bilingual education in Chile from a historical and sociological perspective. It analyses the possibilities of the state-run programme for intercultural bilingual education which aims at providing indigenous pupils with better opportunities. Through a discussion of several of the programme’s aspects the paper tries to show that by exclusively targeting indigenous children this educational policy presents internal limitations which keep it from achieving its objectives.
