In July 1955 an Oxford University Expedition went to Borneo and spent six months on the Usun Apau, a remote tableland in the head-waters of the Rejang, Sarawak's greatest river. To reach this plateau the expedition had to travel by launch, by large covered canoes, and then in small canoes hollowed out of tree trunks or else on foot through the dense tropical jungle. Porters carried supplies, but such were the difficulties of communication that the R.A.F. provided two airdrops. The expedition, ranging over an area of 600 square miles-much of it unknown country even to the native assistants and porters, made a geological survey, excavated old, deserted longhouse village sites, collected folk stories as well as zoological and botanical specimens, and studied the Nomadic Penans, most primitive of all Borneo people. Very pale skinned because they seldom see the sun, the Penans live entirely off the land, hunting with blowpipes and poison darts, moving from place to place, and keeping to themselves. Shy at first, they later became friendly, but were a contrast to the other tribes who, living in longhouse communities, delighted to entertain the strangers from Oxford with parties of singing, dancing and drinking in which everyone took part. Mr Arnold, who led the expedition, tells his unusual story with such fascinating human and scientific detail that to follow him and his companions over the Usun Apau is a rewarding experience.
