Content: Long description: Presentations of war and violence in museums generally oscillate between the fascination of terror and its instruments and the didactic urge to explain violence and, by analysing it, make it easier to handle and prevent. The museums concerned also have to face up to these basic issues about the social and institutional handling of war and violence. Does war really belong in museums? And if it does, what objectives and means are involved? Can museums avoid trivializing and aestheticising war, transforming violence, injury, death and trauma into tourist sights? What images of shock or identification does one generate - and what images would be desirable?

Content: Long description: Abundant, salutary, problematic - energy makes history. As a symbol, resource and consumer good, it shapes technologies, politics, societies and cultural world views. Focussing on a range of energy types, from electricity and oil to bioenergy, this volume analyzes the social, cultural and political concepts and discourses of energy and their implementation and materialization within technical systems, applications, media representations and consumer practice. By examining and connecting production, mediation and consumption aspects from an international and interdisciplinary perspective, the book offers an innovative view on how energy is imagined, discussed, staged and used.

Content: Long description: The volume entails a collection of contributions by leading scholars (Raymond Bryant, Michael K. Goodman, Benjamin Huybrechts, Andrew E.G. Jonas, Roger Lee, Peter North, and Katinka Weber) concerned with alternative modes of economic and social exchange. The cases addressed in these contributions - including credit unions, alternative currencies, sustainable consumption, and social enterprises - deliver valuable insights into how such alternatives are performed at various scales and spaces in relation to and beyond the economic mainstream. In sum, the collection provides vital grounds for both a transition of the economic system towards a more sustainable one, and a reconceptualisation of the economic itself in our scholarly thinking and everyday lives.
Content: Biographical note: Hans-Martin Zademach is Professor of Economic Geography at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt. Sebastian Hillebrand is Research and Teaching Associate in the Department of Geography at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt.
Content: Quote: »This book is a welcome addition to the alternative economics literature, and would be helpful for students, academics and practitioners. The book clearly illustrates the complexity and various ethical negotiations facing those of us interested in alternative socio-economic practices.« Gradon Diprose, International Journal of Community Currency Research, 18 (2014) »Das Buch zeichnet sich durch eine für Sammelbände ungewöhnliche Kohärenz aus.

Content: Long description: In the cultural and social formations of the past, practices exist for the generation and integration of moments having and giving sense with the objective of strengthening the cultural and social cohesion. Such practices and processes have a constructive character, even if this is not always the intention of the actors themselves. As the production of sense is one of the central fields of action of cultural and political practice, the articles examine with an interdisciplinary perspective how, in different contexts, the construction of sense was organized and implemented as a cultural practice.

Content: Long description: Trauma has become a hotly contested topic in literary studies. But interest in trauma is not new; its roots extend to the Romantic period, when novelists and the first psychiatrists influenced each others' investigations of the »wounded mind«. This book looks back to these early attempts to understand trauma, reading a selection of Romantic novels in dialogue with Romantic and contemporary psychiatry. It then carries that dialogue forward to postmodern fiction, examining further how empirical approaches can deepen our theorizations of trauma. Within an interdisciplinary framework, this study reveals fresh insights into the poetics, politics, and ethics of trauma fiction.
Content: Biographical note: Christa Schönfelder teaches English literature at the University of Zurich. Her research interests include Romanticism, postmodern fiction, trauma theory, and gender studies.

Content: Long description: What do we know about the urban impoverished areas of the world and the living environment of its inhabitants? How did the urban poor cope with their surroundings? How did they interpret and adopt urban space in order to fight against their position at the periphery of society? This volume takes up these questions and investigates how far approaches of cultural sciences can contribute to overcome the »exoticization of the ghetto« (Loïc Wacquant) and instead to look at the heterogeneity and individuality behind the facades. It opens new perspectives for the research of poverty and inequalities that do not stop at collective categories.

Content: Long description: The concept of »worldmaking« is based on the idea that 'the world' is not given, but rather produced through language, actions, ideas and perception. This collection of essays takes a closer look at various hybrid and disparate worlds related to dance and choreography. Coming from a broad range of different backgrounds and disciplines, the authors inquire into the ways of producing 'dance worlds': through artistic practice, discourse and media, choreographic form and dance material. The essays in this volume critically reflect the predominant topos of dance as something fleeting and ephemeral - an embodiment of the Other in modernity. Moreover, they demonstrate that there is more than just one universal »world of dance«, but rather a multitude of interrelated dance worlds with more emerging every day.
Content: Biographical note: Gabriele Klein is professor of dance and performance studies at Hamburg University. She leads the master's program in performance studies and the research network »Translating and Framing. Practices of Medial Transformations«. She is a member of the Hamburg Cluster of Excellence »Understanding Written Artefacts«. Her research fields are the social and political theory of dance, choreography, and performance, body politics, and transnational popular dance cultures. Sandra Noeth (Dr. phil.) is a Professor at the HZT-Inter-University Centre for Dance Berlin (Berlin University of the Arts/University of Performing Arts »Ernst Busch«) and curator and dramaturge internationally active in independent and institutional contexts. She specializes in ethical and political perspectives toward body-practice and theory and in dramaturgy in body-based performing arts. As Head of Dramaturgy and Research at Tanzquartier Wien (2009-2014), Sandra Noeth developed a series of research and presentation projects on concepts and practices of responsibility, religion, integrity and protest in relation to the body. As an educator, she has been working with DOCH-Stockholm University of the Arts since 2012 and was Resident Professor in the 2015-16 HWP-program at Ashkal Alwan, Beirut.

Content: Long description: Focussing European borders: The book provides insight into a variety of changes in the nature of borders in Europe and its neighborhood from various disciplinary perspectives. Special attention is paid to the history and contemporary dynamics at Polish and German borders. Of particular interest are the creation of Euroregions, mutual perceptions of Poles and Germans at the border, EU Regional Policy, media debates on the extension of the Schengen area. Analysis of cross-border mobility between Abkhazia and Georgia or the impact of Israel's »Security Fence« to Palestine on society complement the focus on Europe with a wider view.
