Viele der Protagonisten der Moderne sammelten Kinderzeichnungen und suchten in Kinderkunst neue gestalterische Impulse. Wassily Kandinsky und Gabriele Münter zum Beispiel legten eine Sammlung mit über zweihundert Zeichnungen an, Paul Klee nahm eigene Zeichnungen aus der Kindheit in sein OEuvreverzeichnis auf und organisierte zusammen mit Kandinsky im Jahr 1929 eine Ausstellung von Kinderzeichnungen am Bauhaus. Den Einfluss von Kinderzeichnungen auf die Künstler dokumentiert der vorliegende Band. Sie stammen fast ausschließlich aus den von Künstlern selbst angelegten Sammlungen und werden moderner Kunst unseres Jahrhunderts gegenübergestellt, um einen neuen Einblick zu ihrem Verständnis zu gewähren. Die Konfrontation mit Werken von Chagall, Dubuffet, Miró, Klee, Kandinsky, Münter, Picasso, der Cobra-Gruppe und Arbeiten zeitgenössischer Kunst lässt enge Bezüge sichtbar werden.
