Hamburg will wachsen: "Sprung über die Elbe" und HafenCity bestimmen die Diskussionen über die Zukunft der Stadt. Das Museum der Arbeit beteiligt sich daran mit der Sonderausstellung "Stadt Natur" und weiteren Ausstellungen. Denn gerade in Zeiten städtebaulicher Visionen gilt es, die vielschichtige Beziehung zwischen Stadt und Natur zu beleuchten - nicht zuletzt, weil Hamburg auch weiterhin das Image der "grünen Stadt am Wasser" pflegen möchte. Wie stehen Stadt und Natur zueinander? Diese Frage stellt sich, seit im 19. Jahrhundert industrielle Großstädte entstanden, seit Menschen den modernen städtischen Alltag erleben und gestalten. Auf den ersten Blick stehen sich ungezähmte Wildnis und lebensfeindliche Steinwüste gegenüber. Doch Stadt und Natur sind nicht zu trennen: In der Stadt umgibt uns inszenierte und disziplinierte Stadt-Natur, während "Natur der vierten Art" alte Industrieanlagen überwuchert, Wildtiere neue Reviere erobern und Stadtmenschen in Konsum und Lebensstil ihre "Naturverbundenheit" demonstrieren. Zwar scheint das Leben in Städten fast befreit von natürlichen Zwängen wie Tages- oder Jahreszeiten, doch eben deshalb wirken Umweltkatastrophen dort besonders verheerend und "Wildes" störend oder beängstigend. Wir reagieren mit Schutzmaßnahmen und Disziplinierungsversuchen.
