Die holsteinische Landschaft rückte erst im späten 18. Jahrhundert ins Blickfeld norddeutscher Maler. Zunächst war ihre Darstellung von der Vorstellung einer idealen Landschaft, eines idyllischen "Arkadiens", geprägt, wie sie in den Künsten allgemein vorherrschte. Im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts entwickelten die Künstler einen genaueren Blick auf die Natur, der sie zu einer realistischeren Landschaftsdarstellung führte. Dieser Entwicklung gehen Ausstellung und Katalog aus Cismar nach. Zugleich lassen sich an den Bildern die landschaftlichen Veränderungen ablesen, die sich seither vollzogen haben.
