Im April 2006 traf sich eine Gruppe international geachteter Experten aus dem Gebiet der Handschriften- und Bibliotheksforschung in Trier, um über neue Formen der Erschließung mittelalterlicher Handschriften zu diskutieren. Die Ergebnisse des Workshops werden im vorliegenden Band publiziert. Die Spannweite der Beiträge reicht von der Beschreibung aktueller Katalogisierungsprojekte in Koblenz, Luxemburg und Trier über die Frage nach der Bedeutung mittelalterlicher Bibliothekskataloge bis hin zu Problemen der Digitalisierung und virtuellen Rekonstruktion dislozierter Bibliotheken. Ein besonderes Augenmerk ist dem Komplex der Förderung aktueller Digitalisierungsprojekte durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft gewidmet.
