Anne Weber wählt die Form eines Theaters im Kopf, um die Existenz eines ewigen Sohnes und sein Ringen um Selbständigkeit als Ausweg in die Freiheit literarische vielstimmig und eindringlich darzustellen. Die Frankfurter Rundschau resümiert: "Anne Weber hat rein gar nichts Neues zum Leben des August von Goethe beizutragen. Das aber macht sie hinreißend. Ihr „bürgerliches Puppentrauerspiel“ gibt sich auf geradezu unverschämte Weise keine Mühe, den Sohn des berühmtesten aller Dichter deutscher Sprache zu diesem hinan zu ziehen, ihm Würde und Tragik zu verleihen, ihn überhaupt sonderlich ernst zu nehmen. Stattdessen, wie der Untertitel sagt, ist „August“ ein Marionettengezappel, das auch den großen Vater einschnurren lässt in Possierliche". Die FAZ urteilt dagegen: "Insgesamt aber scheitert die Verfasserin daran, die disparaten Szenen zu einem stimmigen Ganzem zusammenzufügen"
