Die Beschäftigung mit der Geschichte und die Auseinandersetzung mit seiner Zeit, die er ganz im Sinne europäischen Denkens aufnahm, war Stefan Zweig Bedürfnis. Dem Pazifisten war Krieg, war jede gewalttätige Auseinandersetzung zuwider, Friede und Sicherheit waren ihm die »höchsten Güter«. Sie galt es anzustreben, zu suchen, wobei er unter Suchen zugleich »Sammeln der Kraft« gegen Resignation und Verzweiflung verstand. Stefan Zweig konzentrierte sich auf die politische Sprache und fand den »Sinn hinter den Worten verwaschen geworden«. So forderte er: »Aufgabe jedes denkenden Künstlers muß es darum werden, alle Begriffe in erkennerischer Leidenschaft einzuschmelzen und geistig neuzuprägen; der Umwertung der Werte muß die Umwertung der Worte vorausgehen. « In diesem Sinne nutzte er seine eigene Ausdruckskraft, die Eindringlichkeit seiner Sprache, um vor allem mit seinem Gcschichtswissen - über das augenfällig »dramatische« und psychologische Element hinaus - einem besseren Verständnis von Humanität zu dienen. Seine geschichtsphilosophischen Betrachtungen sind dabei immer auf seine Zeit bezogen und spiegeln einen Grundzug seines Wesens: die ständige Bereitschaft, anderen zu helfen, auch mit dem Wort. Die Umsetzung dieser Forderung an sich selbst in die Tat im Laufe seines Lebens zu verdeutlichen, ist Ziel dieser Auswahl.
