    Series Statement: Untersuchungen zur antiken Literatur und Geschichte Bd. 73
    Content: Biographical note: Sophia Papaioannou lehrt Lateinische Sprachwissenschaft am Institut für Klassische Altertumswissenschaften und Philosophie der Universität Zypern.
    Content: Biographical note: Sophia Papaioannou teaches Latin Literature at the Department of Classics and Philosophy of the University of Cyprus.
    Content: In Ovids Metamorphosen 13.623–14.582 liegt die erste literarische Bearbeitung von Vergils Aeneis vor. Papaioannou zeigt, wie Ovid in weniger als 1.000 Versen die epische Welt des Aeneas wieder aufleben ließ. Die ‚kleine Aeneis‘ in den Metamorphosen ist zugleich eine mustergültige kritische Analyse, ein klares Votum zugunsten von Originalität und eine kraftvolle Hommage an das epische Erbe und an Vergil selbst.
    Content: This is the first direct literary adaptation of Vergil's Aeneid. The present study demonstrates how, in less than one thousand lines, Ovid revisits the epic world of Aeneas and subjects it to a reading that is a paradigm of critical analysis, a statement of originality, and a powerful claim to the epic heritage and Vergilian succession.

    Series Statement: Untersuchungen zur antiken Literatur und Geschichte ;
    Content: Hiermit liegt die erste ausführliche, neuzeitliche und kritische Analyse von Ovids Metamorphosen 13.623-14.582 vor. Ovid setzte hier neue Maßstäbe in Bezug auf epische Poesie und die Art ihrer Rezeption. Zunächst wird die methodologische Komplexität von Ovids 'Umarmungsstrategie' vorgestellt, daran anschließend diskutiert Papaioannou in einer genauen Untersuchung der 'kleinen Aeneis' das dichte Netz von Anspielungen auf das Original, legt die Struktur und die Themen jeder Episode aus und zeigt prominente Motive in den Metamorphosen auf. Nicht zuletzt werden die poetischen Techniken der Metamorphosen erkundet, wobei Papaioannou argumentiert, Ovid reproduziere den Geist und die Grundzüge des Originals durch seine selektive Einbettung der Aeneis auf sehr durchdachte, idiosynkratische Weise.
    Content: This study constitutes the first modern book-length, in-depth critical analysis of Ovid, Metamorphoses 13.623-14.582. In this unit Ovid, by challenging openly the artistry of his great predecessor Vergil, redraws the parameters associated with the definition and appreciation of epic poetry. The book first introduces the methodological complexity of the Ovidian embrace strategy, and, subsequently, it reads the 'little Aeneid' closely, discussing the network of allusions to its prototype. It assesses the structure and thematics of each episode in the cluster, and traces the recurrence of prominent motifs throughout the Metamorphoses. Not least, it explores poetics, arguing that Ovid's selective incorporation of the Aeneid reproduces the spirit and fundamental ideas of the model in an idiosyncratic sophisticated manner.
