Ausgehend von einem besonderen Personenbegriff und dem Prinzip, Leiden zu vermeiden, diskutiert Singer moralische Probleme wie Abtreibung, aktive und passive Euthanasie, das Töten von Tieren, die Verpflichtung gegenüber der 3. Welt u.a.m. Gegenüber der Erstauflage sind die einzelnen Texte überarbeitet und ein Kapitel zur Flüchtlingsproblematik und eines zur Umweltthematik hinzugefügt. Im Anhang schildert er, "wie man in Deutschland mundtot gemacht wird", nachdem seine für 1989/90 angekündigten Vorträge über Euthanasie wegen Protestaktionen vor allem von Behinderten abgesagt werden mussten. - Unabhängig davon, wie man zu Singers Eugenik-Thesen steht, als Diskussionsgrundlage anbieten.
