Die deutsche Ausgabe der 1989 zeitgleich mit R. Lifton "Ärzte im Dritten Reich" (BA 2/89) erschienenen umfassenden Studie über die Rolle der Ärzte und der Medizin im Nationalsozialismus kommt spät, aber nicht zu spät: Das "Standardwerk" (H. Mommsen) musste in Text, Anmerkungen und umfangreicher Bibliographie nicht aktualisiert werden, denn tatsächlich ist seither keine vergleichbare Studie erschienen (anders und journalistisch akzentuiert. H. Scharsach: "Die Ärzte der Nazis", in dieser Nr.). Der seit Jahren an der York-University Toronto lehrende, mit Studien u.a. über Himmlers "Ahnenerbe" (1974, nicht angezeigt), Jazz im Dritten Reich ("Gewagtes Spiel", BA 7/95) und Musiker in Hitler-Deutschland ("Die missbrauchte Muse", ID 1/99) hervorgetretene Zeithistoriker stützt sich dabei auf umfangreiche Recherchen und eine genaue Kenntnis der NS-Geschichte.
