Dieses Buch gilt seit langem als das Standardwerk zur Entstehungsgeschichte des Staatsvertrags vom 15. Mai 1955. Der Vertrag hat zehn Jahre nach der Proklamation von Österreichs Unabhängigkeit gemeinsam mit der Neutralitätserklärung zum Ende der Ost-West-Besetzung Österreichs geführt und Österreichs wirkliche Selbständigkeit errichtet. Nunmehr präsentieren Gerald Stourzh und Mitautor Wolfgang Mueller, Professor für Russische Geschichte an der Universität Wien, das Werk in stark revidierter und neuerlich erweiterter Form, auch mit einem neuen Titel. Neu einbezogen wurden zahlreiche weitere Akten aus Moskauer Archiven wie dem Stalin- und dem Molotov-Nachlass und Fachliteratur der letzten Jahrzehnte. Damit konnten in früheren Auflagen offen gebliebene Fragen beantwortet werden. Kein anderes Werk zum Thema erreicht die Fülle des hier verarbeiteten Quellenmaterials.
