Die Geschichte eines amerikanischen Seemanns erschien erstmals 1926 und berichtet, wie dieser in den Kneipen Antwerpens das Auslaufen seines Schiffes versäumt und sich als Mensch ohne Pass und Papiere, ohne nachweisliche Nationalität, einem ungewissen Schicksal ausgeliefert sieht, wie er als Namenloser von Staat zu Staat gehetzt wird und schließlich auf einem morschen ŽTotenschiffž mit betrügerisch hochversicherter, aber wertloser Ladung untergeht. Traven geht es dabei nicht um das Schicksal eines Menschen, sondern um die Willkür staatlicher Despotie und Sklaverei. Der Roman wurde mit Horst Buchholz, Mario Adorf und Elke Sommer erfolgreich verfilmt.
