Yasar Kemal, geboren 1923 in einem südanatolischen Dorf, gilt als der "Sänger und Chronist seines Landes" und ist einer der ganz Großen der türkischen Literatur. Sein Werk (zuletzt BA 3/97) ist in viele Sprachen übersetzt und mit zahlreichen Preisen ausgezeichnet (zuletzt 1997 der Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels). In diesem 1992 im französischen Original erschienenen Band erzählt Kemal, strukturiert durch Fragen Alain Bosquets, aus seinem Leben und über sein Werk: die harte und doch stolze Kindheit und Jugend, der frühe Ruhm als wandernder Sänger, sein Weg zur Literatur, seine politische Sozialisation und die ständigen Konflikte mit den wechselnden türkischen Regimes - von Zensur bis hin zu Gefängnis und Folter. Wie die Romane Kemals ist auch sein eigenes Leben ein abenteuerliches, dramatisches Epos, kraftvoll und sprachgewaltig; keine trockene Faktenbiographie, sondern das Bild eines Menschen und seines Landes.
