Die letzte handbuchartige Darstellung der Epoche erschien 1931 in einer damals bereits überarbeiteten Gestalt. Ernst Koch verfolgt nun einen Ansatz, der das in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten diskutierte Modell der "Konfessionalisierung" aufnimmt: die durchgreifende Umgestaltung, bezogen auf das Territorium, maßgeblich getragen von religiösen Kräften, die sich als Konfessionen verstanden und formierten. Die Darstellung beschränkt sich nicht auf die deutsche Kirchengeschichte, sondern bezieht andere Teile Europas und die Expansion des römisch-katholischen Christentums nach Übersee in die Nachzeichnung des Konfessionalisierungsprozesses ein. Danach wendet sie sich dem Alten Reich zu.
