Dem Bereich des Erziehungs- und Bildungswesens haben die Kirchen stets besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Das zeigt ihr starkes personelles und finanzielles Engagement. Die vielfältigen Berührungspunkte auf diesem Sektor führten in der Neuzeit nicht selten zu Kontroversen zwischen Staat und Kirche. Das 9. Essener Gespräch widmete sich der in Art. 7 des Grundgesetzes verankerten Privatschulfreiheit, ihrem Verhältnis zur staatlichen Schulhoheit und ihrer finanziellen Sicherung.
