Obwohl der Wiener Philosophieprofessor Peter Kampits die Philosophie von Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) in den Mittelpunkt seiner Einführung stellt, fühlt man sich am Ende seiner Ausführungen nicht nur über diese wohl informiert, sondern auch über das Leben und das vielfältige Engagement des französischen Philosophen, der in seinen letzten Lebensjahren zu einer Symbolgestalt des Intellektuellen im 20. Jahrhundert aufgestiegen ist. Anschaulich, fesselnd und überaus verständlich skizziert der Autor Sartres Entwicklung mit seinen vielen Brüchen und geht sachkundig auf seine unterschiedlichen philosophischen und literarischen Werke ein, ohne Sartres Gedankengänge über Gebühr zu vereinfachen. Dem Leser bleibt also eigenes Kopfzerbrechen nicht erspart. Sartre ist zwar nach seinem Tod schon häufig gewürdigt geworden, z.B. von S. Möbuß (ID 43/00), M. Suhr (ID 27/01), Chr. Hakenesch (BA 7/01) und vor allem von B. H. Lévy (BA 12/02). Gleichwohl lohnt sich die Anschaffung auch dieses Buches, nicht zuletzt für jene Bibliotheken, die seinerzeit auf das voluminöse Werk von Lévy verzichtet haben. (2 S) (Ursula Homann)
