Wieder ist es ein englischer Germanist (bis 2007 Universität Cambridge) der eine gewichtige geisteswissenschaftliche Biografie eines großen deutschen Autors vorlegt. 10 Jahre hat er intensiv daran gearbeitet. Die gute Lesbarkeit ist sicher auch dem versierten Übersetzer und Kollegen zu verdanken. Herausgekommen ist eine detaillierte Darstellung von Lessings von Sprunghaftigkeit geprägtem Leben und Werk in ihren wechselseitigen Beziehungen und zugleich ein brillantes Panorama der Epoche der Aufklärung auf dem neuesten Forschungsstand. Lessing, zentrale Gestalt der Aufklärung, hat als Autor fast alle Gattungen bedient, war Übersetzer, Literaturkritiker und -theoretiker, Verfasser philosophischer und theologischer Schriften und Bibliothekar. Ausführliche Besprechung der Werke. Keine der bisher erschienenen biografischen Darstellungen (Hildebrand, Jasper, Albrecht) ist so umfassend, gründlich und verlässlich, ganz zu schweigen von den älteren überholten. Breite Empfehlung, aber auch die Warnung, dass 1.024 Seiten dem Leser einiges an Zeit und Mut abverlangen. Eine Zeittafel wäre hilfreich gewesen. (2)
