Dieser Band versammelt Günther Anders’ Schriften zur philosophischen Anthropologie, allen voran den bisher unveröffentlichten Text «Die Weltfremdheit des Menschen» von 1929/30 und die Rückübersetzung des Aufsatzes «Pathologie de la liberté. Essai sur la non-identification», erschienen 1936. In diesen Texten wird der Mensch als ein Wesen porträtiert, das immer erst nachträglich zur Welt kommt und sich immer wieder aufs Neue selbst bestimmen und in der Welt heimisch machen muss. «Künstlichkeit ist die Natur des Menschen und sein Wesen ist Unbeständigkeit», schreibt Anders in Anlehnung an Helmuth Plessner und fordert die heutigen Leser geradezu heraus, seine Anthropologie an gegenwärtige Debatten etwa des Postfundamentalismus oder des Posthumanismus anzuschließen. Vor allem erschließen die hier versammelten Texte ganz wesentlich Anders’ Frühwerk, und erst durch sie erschließt sich die Stoßrichtung des Spätwerks vollständig. Denn sie zeigen, dass auch der späte Anders an der Idee der Weltfremdheit des Menschen festhält. Sie ist der Boden, auf dem sich seine Kritik der technologischen Moderne entfaltet. Das radikal offene Menschenbild von Günther Anders erfasst die Freiheit des Menschen ebenso wie seine Schöpferkraft – aber auch seine historischen Zurichtungen. In seiner Kritik an populistischen und totalitären Bewegungen könnte es zeitgemäßer kaum sein.
