Johannes R. Becher (1891-1958) war im 1. Jahrzehnt der DDR der literarische Repräsentant des kommunistischen Deutschland und ein einflussreicher Kulturfunktionär, von 1954 bis 1958 Kulturminister der DDR. Sein umfangreiches literarisches Werk allerdings erscheint nicht erst aus heutiger Sicht hoffnungslos epigonal. In der gründlich recherchierten Lebensbeschreibung von A. Behrens wird es deshalb zur Recht nur ganz am Rande behandelt. Im Mittelpunkt steht hier die für das 20. Jahrhundert keineswegs atypische geistige Entwicklung eines durch und durch bürgerlich geprägten jungen Deutschen, der in einer persönlichen Lebens- und Sinnkrise Zuflucht und geistige Heimat in der kommunistischen Heilsbotschaft fand. Die lebendige geschriebene Biografie droht zwar streckenweise in einer Überfülle von Namen und Fakten ihren roten Faden zu verlieren, sie gibt aber auch vielfältige Einblicke in die schwierige Situation des Moskauer Exils und in die Aufbaujahre der DDR. Zumindest größeren Bibliotheken, zumal in den neuen Bundesländern, als derzeit maßgebliche Biografie empfohlen. (3)
