Ob das deutsche "Kaiserreich" (1871-1918) tatsächlich "...unter preußischer Herrschaft" stand oder ob Preußen in Deutschland aufging, ist unter Historikern durchaus umstritten. In den 33 Beiträgen wird darauf nicht explizit eingegangen. Auch die Verfassungskonstruktion und die Machtverteilung zwischen den gesellschaftlichen Eliten (Agrarier, Großindustrie) spielen keine herausragende Rolle. Die 22 Autoren sind bis auf den Wilhelm II.-Biografen H.C. Röhl Journalisten, überwiegend vom "Spiegel". Die sprachlich gut aufgearbeiteten Beiträge befassen sich über Außenpolitik, Militarismus, Parteien und die Rolle Wilhelms II. hinaus mit einem weiten Themenkanon; u.a. Kultur, Städtebau, technische Neuerungen, Feminismus und beginnender Massentourismus. Eingeleitet wird der Titel mit einem Interview mit dem Historiker Michael Stürmer. Wie in einem Lesebuch kann man hin und her blättern, jeden Aufsatz für sich nehmen. Das könnte Leser animieren, sich tiefer mit dem Kaiserreich zu beschäftigen und dort auch die Wurzeln des 1. Weltkriegs und der weiteren deutschen Geschichte zu entdecken. (2)
