Kaum ein Ereignis hat die Menschen im neunzehnten Jahrhundert so nachhaltig beeindruckt und beschäftigt wie der Russlandfeldzug Napoleons. Innerhalb von sechs Monaten ging 1812 eine Armee von mehr als einer halben Million Soldaten zugrunde, eine Armee, die in ihrer Ausrüstung, Stärke und Organisation für unüberwindlich galt, geführt von einem Feldherrn, der sich in wenigen Jahren ganz Europa unterworfen hatte und unbesiegbar schien. Die unerwartete Vernichtung dieser napoleonischen Armee wirkte auf Europa wie ein Schock. Napoleon selbst machte die Natur für sein Scheitern verantwortlich: ein ungewöhnlich früh einsetzender Winter mit ungewöhnlicher Kälte hätten sein Heer vernichtet. Die Nachwelt hat Napoleons Rechtfertigung fast unwidersprochen hingenommen. Die Augenzeugen des Untergangs indes, Soldaten und Offiziere, dachten anders. Aus ihren Briefen, Tagebüchern und Berichten geht hervor, dass Napoleons Armee bereits geschlagen war, als sie siegreich in Moskau einzog. In diesem Band kommen Franzosen, Deutsche, Russen, Engländer und Polen zu Wort, Angehörige des Generalstabs wie einfache Soldaten, aber auch die beiden großen Gegenspieler selbst: Napoleon und Zar Alexander I.
