In ihrer Biographie beschreibt Mende Nazer, wie sie mit etwa 12 Jahren bei einem Überfall von Milizionären aus ihrem Dorf vom Stamm der Nuba in Sudan verschleppt wurde. Sie wurde, wie weitere gefangengenommene Kinder, an einen Sklavenhändler verkauft, der sie in die Hauptstadt Khartum brachte. Dort wurde sie weiterverkauft und rund acht Jahre lang zu einem Leben als Sklavin in einem wohlhabenden Haushalt gezwungen. Schließlich wurde sie von ihrer Herrin an deren Schwester weitergegeben, die in London als Frau eines sudanesischen Diplomaten lebte. Mende Nazers Sklavendasein setzte sich im Haus jenes Diplomaten fort. Im Jahr 2000 gelang ihr mit Hilfe anderer Stammesangehöriger die Flucht. Mit Hilfe von Damien Lewis, einem britischen Journalisten und Sudan-Experten, entstand ihre Autobiographie. (AUT)
