Mit seinem 2. Roman, 1953 erschienen, festigte Lenz seine literarische Position. In der spannenden, wenn auch existenzphilosophisch etwas überfrachteten Geschichte, kehrt ein psychisch gestörter ehemaliger Oberst des deutschen Afrikakorps an den Austragungsort seiner Kämpfe in Libyen zurück. Während des Kriegs wurde er an einem Untergebenen schuldig, nun will er seine Vergangenheit bewältigen, verliert aber das Duell mit deren Schatten, weil er die Gegenwart dabei nicht beachtet. Er geht im Wüstensand zugrunde. Seine ihn begleitende Tochter löst sich aus den Fesseln des tyrannischen Vaters und reift an dieser Auseinandersetzung, unterstützt von 2 Engländern, die unter anderer Zielsetzung ebenfalls mit vergangenen Erlebnissen zu kämpfen haben. Dieser Roman ist nur in dieser Werkausgabe (s.a. "Es waren Habichte ..." in dieser Nr.) lieferbar. Als gut lesbares Beispiel für den frühen und kraftvollen Lenz ab mittleren Bibliotheken sehr empfohlen. (Hans-Jürgen Zimmermann)
