Die unterschiedlichen Erzählformen der Idylle in der Literatur des deutschsprachigen Realismus stehen im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes. Spätestens seit Jean Paul hat sich die Idylle aus ihren arkadischen Szenerien herausgelöst und ist in alle Winkel der erzählten Welt eingewandert: heimliche Plätze in Gärten und Wäldern, die Familie, das Haus, Spaziergänge und Küchenherde. Indem die idyllischen Szenerien die Vorstellung eines geschützten und abgeschlossenen Erzählraums zum Ausdruck bringen, werden sie gleichzeitig in ihrer Funktion als Gegenbilder gegenüber den Erfahrungen einer sich entfremdenden, modernen Lebenswelt sichtbar. Sie lassen sich somit vor allem auch als Indiz einer bedrohlich prekären Gegenwart lesen. Die Beiträge loten dabei stets die Frage aus, ob die jeweiligen Texte in eine abwehrende Geste der Verklärung flüchten oder ob sie sich die kritisch-reflexiven Potentiale der Idyllenform zunutze machen
