Im ersten Drittel des 20. Jahrhunderts revolutionierte die moderne Physik das Weltbild. Die weltanschaulich brisanten Aussagen von Einstein, Heisenberg u.a. erlangten in der von sozioökonomischen und politischen Krisen geprägten Epoche ungeahnte Aufmerksamkeit. Auch in anderen Kulturbereichen wirkten sie in höchstem Maße inspirierend. Ein herausragendes Beispiel dafür ist der Roman der klassischen Moderne", wo ästhetisch-stilistische Konzeption und implizites Literaturverständnis, etwa bei C. Einstein, Broch und Musil, zum Teil wesentlich auf der Rezeption der neuen physikalischen Theorien beruhten. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der "Auflösung der Natur" (Benn) beschränkte sich allerdings längst nicht auf Intellektuellenkreise. Wie die detaillierte Analyse der flächendeckenden Popularisierung von Relativitätstheorie und Quantenmechanik in Illustrierten, Kirchenblättern, Familienmagazinen usw. zeigt, war die Physik im Alltagsdiskurs der Weimarer Republik omnipräsent. In ihren vulgarisierten Auswüchsen, auf der Ebene der Diskussion um das "wahre" Welt-Bild, förderte sie auch das Erstarken antisemitischer Tendenzen und war maßgeblich mit verantwortlich für den schweren mentalitätsgeschichtlichen Einbruch, der die Ausbildung und wachsende Attraktivität der NS-"Weltanschauung" möglich machte.
