Der mörderische Judenhass der Nationalsozialisten hat eine lange Vorgeschichte. Seitdem es Juden in Deutschland gab, wurden sie von ihrer Umwelt verfolgt. Der moderne Antisemitismus beginnt allerdings erst Ende des 18ten Jahrhunderts. Der Autor versucht in seinem Buch diesen Prozess nachzuzeichnen, der von etwa 1780 bis in die Weimarer Republik reicht. Er schildert die Versuche der Juden in Deutschland, als gleichberechtigte Staatsbürger anerkannt zu werden, und die Reaktionen der Gesellschaft darauf, die schließlich in die Katastrophe von 1933 mündeten. Dabei werden auch die Gründe dafür deutlich, warum das Unheil für die Juden nach 1933 gerade aus Deutschland kam.(AUT)
