Alexander Solschenizyn verbrachte viele Jahre seines Lebens in den Straflagern Sibiriens und in der Verbannung. Gestützt auf seine eigenen Erfahrungen und die Berichte von über 200 Überlebenden hat er zwischen 1958 und 1967 ein aufrüttelndes Epos geschaffen, das die "unmenschliche Macht von Menschen über Menschen" bezeugt: Der Archipel Gulag. Das Buch besteht aus drei Bänden. Im ersten Band steht die geschichtliche Entwicklung des Systems im Mittelpunkt. Band 2 schildert die Lagerwelt aus der Sicht der verschiedenen Gruppen, die sie bevölkerten und beschreibt den Weg der Häftlinge von der Einlieferung bis zum Tode durch Erschöpfung, Krankheiten oder den Sadismus der Bewacher. Mit dem dritten Band ist das Werk abgeschlossen. Er handelt von der Bestrafung politischer Häftlinge unter dem zaristischen und dem bolschewistischen System, schildert die Massenvertreibung ganzer Klassen, die Zwangsumsiedlung ganzer Völker und gibt einen Ausblick auf die Zeit nach Stalin. Solschenizyn nennt Der Archipel Gulag den "Versuch einer künstlerischen Bewältigung", "all jenen gewidmet, die nicht genug Leben hatten, um dies zu erzählen". Das Buch ist ein Aufschrei, eine Anklage gegen die Unmenschlichkeit, gegen die Unfreiheit und gegen den Terror. Solschenizyn hat das sowjetische Lagersystem weltweit bekanntgemacht, er hat die Öffentlichkeit aufgerüttelt und er hat das Sowjetunionbild des Westens maßgeblich geprägt. Es mag inzwischen wissenschaftlich fundiertere Arbeiten über den Gulag geben, an der herausragenden Bedeutung von Solschenizyns Werk ändert das nichts. -Stephan Fingerle
