In den Beiträgen des Bandes wird das Verhältnis von Staat und Raum in unterschiedlichen Ansätzen zeitgenössischer Politischer Geographie skizziert. In deutlicher Abgrenzung zu traditioneller Geographie – die kritisch reflektiert wird –, wird "Raum" aus poststrukturalistischer, sprachpragmatischer und historisch-materialistischer Perspektive bestimmt und seine Relevanz für "Staat" diskutiert. "Raum" ist dabei nicht mehr nur der Container, in dem "Staat" stattfindet, sondern Raumbezüge in Sprechakten, Diskursen und Praktiken und Raum als Technologie und soziales Produkt sind dynamische und produktive Momente des Staates. Solche Zugänge zur Räumlichkeiten von Staat erlaubt ein besseres Verständnis aktueller Phänomene. Im Band werden unter anderem thematisiert: Migration, Transnationalismus, Globalisierung, Regionalisierung, die EU, die Ubiquität von Grenzen, geopolitische Weltbilder und neuer Imperialismus.
