Der 13-jährige Jorge Semprun flieht 1936 mit seiner Familie vor dem spanischen Bürgerkrieg nach Paris, wo er das Gymnasium Henri IV besucht. Bis 1939 reicht der Hintergrund dieses Lebensberichts, in dem der junge Spanier mit den Problemen des Erwachsenwerdens im Exil konfrontiert wird, die Geheimnisse der Stadt Paris auf langen Spaziergängen zu ergründen versucht und sich die französische Sprache zu eigen macht. Rimbaud, Gide und vor allem Baudelaires Gedichte führen ihn an die Literatur seiner neuen Heimat heran. Semprun ist kein Freund der Schilderung chronologischer Abläufe. Das zeitliche Hin und Her zwischen Vorgriffen und Rückblenden ist für den Leser manchmal recht verwirrend; nach den Worten des Autors kein rhetorischer Kunstgriff, sondern schon eher eine Manie. Dieses Buch steht zeitlich vor den autobiografischen Bänden "Die große Reise" und "Was für ein schöner Sonntag!" (beide BA 11/95). (2) (Rolf-Ingo Behnke)
