Bei unseren Mathematikvorlesungen für Physiker stellten wir immer wieder fest, daß es zwar eine Fülle vorzüglicher Einzeldarstellungen der verschiedenen mathematischen Teilgebiete gibt, daß aber eine auf naturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen zugeschnittene Zusammenfassung bisher fehlte. Mit diesem ersten Band eines geplanten dreibändigen Werkes wollen wir dem Physiker eine integrierte Darstellung der für ihn wichtigsten mathematischen Grundlagen, wie sie üblicherweise im Grundstudium behandelt werden, an die Hand geben. Im zweiten und dritten Band behandeln wir gewöhnliche und partielle Differentialgleichungen, Operatoren der Quantenmechanik, Variationsrechnung, Differentialgeometrie und mathematische Grundlagen der Relativitätstheorie. Beim Aufbau des ersten Bandes war zu berücksichtigen, daß der Differential und Integralkalkül bis hin Einsicht verbunden. Dem Problembewußtsein sollen die eingestreuten historischen Bemerkungen sowie die Gegenbeispiele und "pathologischen" Fälle dienen, vor allem aber auch die Beweise
