Etwa 50 000 Menschen sind in der DDR hauptberuflich im Dienst von Kirchen und Religionsgemeinschaften sowie ihrer Einrichtungen, insbesondere auf dem Felde von Diakonie und Caritas, tätig. Wieviel DDR-Bürger sich selbst als Christen ansehen, eine innere oder zumindest doch traditionell formale Bindung zu ihrer Kirche haben, ist nicht genau festzustellen. Unbestreitbar aber handelt es sich trotz sinkender Mitgliedschaftszahlen, um eine Minderheit, die allein durch ihre Existenz zum gesellschaftlichen Faktor wird. Die SED hat das von Beginn an erkannt. Neben allen Bemühungen, der Kirche wo immer möglich das Wasser abzugraben, zeigt sich das Bestreben, im System des "real existierenden Sozialismus" der real "existierenden Kirche" einen Stellenwert einzuräumen, der den von Ideologie und Glauben her zwangsläufig vorgegebenen Konflikt begrenzt, ja die Kräfte aus Glauben und Kirchenverbundenheit auch für die sozialistische Gesellschaft nutzbar macht. Dem entspricht ein Bemühen in der Kirche, einen Weg in der sozialistischen Gesellschaft zu finden, der die Sackgasse einer Privatisierung der Religion vermeidet, also über die bloße Negation hinausführt zu Möglichkeiten eigenständiger verantwortlicher Mitarbeit für das Wohl der Menschen. Die Gratwanderung der Kirche zwischen den Abgründen der Opposition und des Opportunismus einerseits und die Gratwanderung der SED zwischen ideologischem Totalanspruch und politischem Realismus andererseits ist ein Thema dieses Buches
