Note:
Autobiographien, besonders wenn ihre Verfasser aus bildungsfernen Schichten stammen, haben von jeher auf ihre Leser eine gewisse Suggestion ausgeübt. Leicht vermitteln sie nämlich den Eindruck von 'Geschichten, die das Leben schrieb', also von Produkten eines voraussetzungslosen Schreibens, das sich nicht in vorgegebenen literarischen Traditionen oder gegen sie artikuliert, sondern neben - quasi extraterritorial - allen geistesgeschichtlichen und literarischen Referenzen. Schon Ulrich Braker stilisierte sich nach dem Muster: "Ich bin nur ein einfältiger Laie und schreibe nur meine Gedanken." (Tagebuch 5. Oktober 1788; vgl. auch Chronik Ulrich Braker 1985, S. 329) Nur als solcher glaubte sich dieser kleinbürgerliche Pauper Zugang schaffen zu können zu den damaligen bürgerlichen Bildungsgesellschaften; und nur als solcher, als schriftstellerisches Naturtalent, glaubte er in der damaligen literarischen Öffentlichkeit ein eigenes Terrain abstecken zu können. Dementsprechend war die Literaturgeschichtsschreibung eher geneigt, Brakers "ursprüngliche Lebendigkeit des Ausdrucks" (Misch IV.2, S. 813) oder die "unverdorbene Naivität seines Wesens" (Klaiber 1921, S. 94) hervorzuheben, als der Frage nachzugehen, welchen Einfluß seine intensive Shakespeare-Lektüre, seine Rezeption zeitgenössischer Literatur und insbesondere seine Auseinandersetzung mit Autobiographien von anderen Autoren, etwa von Rousseau und Jung Stilling, auf die Abfassung seiner eigenen Lebensgeschichte ausgeübt haben
