Am Beginn dieser Studie stand ein doppeltes Erstaunen bei der Lektü re von Peter Weiss' Texten. Das erste Erstaunen war eines über die Äs 1 thetik des Widerstands , eines darüber, daß dies alles in einem Werk li terarisch dargestellt werden konnte: Nationalsozialismus und Stalinis mus als die beiden größten Katastrophen dieses Jahrhunderts, das Exil, der Widerstand, die Kunst und die Kunsttheorie der Modeme . . . . Hier ist einem Grauen Greifbarkeit und Begreifen zugleich abgetrotzt worden, das sich einer gültigen epischen Form immer wieder verweigert hatte. Aus dem Erstaunen eiwuchs Neugier. Zunächst die Neugier, die sich auf einzelne historische Figuren, aufTheorien, auf die von Weiss beschrie benen Bildwerke, auf geschichtliche Ereignisse aus dem Widerstand richtete. Die Neugier wollte wieder ins Einzelne auflösen, was das Werk vermöge seiner Form integriert hatte, wie sich ja auch das Interesse der Forschung zunächst überwiegend auf den wissenschaftlichen Kommen tar einzelner Elemente des Buches richtete. Weiss' Anstrengung, die im Sinne der XVII. These Walter Benjamins Über den Begriff der Geschich te darauf abzielte, "[ . . . ] eine bestimmte Epoche aus dem homogenen 2 Verlauf der Geschichte herauszusprengen [ . . . ]," wurde so zugunsten der Auflösung des Werks und der Wiedereinfügung seiner Elemente ins Kontinuum der Geschichte bzw. Kunstgeschichte zurückgenommen. Auf diese Weise war mancherlei Belehrung zu erfahren, aber gerade keine Antwort auf die Frage zu erlangen, wie dies alles dargestellt werden konnte
