Die kognitive Psychologie ist eine relativ junge, aber bereits stark ausdifferenzierte Teildisziplin der Psychologie. Über die Inhalte der traditionellen Denkpsychologie (z. B. Bewußtsein) hinaus behandelt die kognitive Psychologie weitere psychische Funktionen, insbesondere Lernen, Wahrnehmung, Gedächtnis und Sprache. Das vorherrschende Paradigma der kognitiven Psychologie, durch das diese Funktionen integriert werden sollen, ist das der Informationsverarbeitung. Es hat Anstöße erhalten vor allem von den Sprachwissenschaften (z. B. die Bedeutung von kognitiv verankerten Regeln für die Erklärung von Verhalten), Informations- und Kommunikationstheorien (z. B. begrenzte Kapazitäten) und Computerwissenschaften (z. B. Beschreibung geistiger Prozesse auf dem 'Programm' Niveau). Grundlegende Idee dieses Paradigmas ist, daß kognitive Prozesse die Verarbeitung von Informationen beinhalten. Darunter ist z. B. zu verstehen, wie der Mensch Informationen zu seinem überdauernden Wissen hinzufügt, wie er darauf wieder zurückgreift oder wie er das Wissen im Rahmen seines Handelns verwendet. Nach Simon (1979) können diese Prozesse auf drei unterschiedlichen Ebenen analysiert werden: als neurophysiologische Prozesse, als elementare Grundoperationen (z. B. Gedächtnisabfrage) oder als 'höhere' geistige Prozesse (z.B. Begriffsbildung, Sprachverstehen, Problemlösen)
