Blättert man etwas in diesem Buch und gerät dabei an das Kapitel: "Neuere Entwicklungen in der Entwicklungsbiologie", so ist man sogleich überwältigt von der Fülle der Gesichtspunkte, die die explosive Neuorientierung unserer Wissenschaft heute kennzeichnet. Noch in den dreißiger Jahren dieses Jahrhunderts ließen Bücher der Entwicklungsphysiologie eine gewisse Einschlägigkeit in der Problemstellung erkennen. Auch die unterschiedlichen Tiergruppen, die zu den entwicklungsphysiologischen Experimenten herangezogen werden konnten, brachten nur eine begrenzte Vielfalt. Die wenn auch vielfach bewundernswerten methodischen Erfolge waren eingeengt durch die Möglichkeiten, die unmittelbare Beobachtung und mikrochirurgisches Experimentieren zuließen. Dieser klassische Rahmen brach innerhalb der letzten 50 Jahre, und zunehmend heftig in den letzten Jahrzehnten, auf: Die Biologie allgemein geriet in eine entscheidende Wandlung, welche den Entwicklungsphysiologen nicht unberührt lassen konnte. Sehr unterschiedliche biologische Disziplinen traten als eigene Forschungszentren hervor und breiteten sich weit aus, wie die Genetik, die Biochemie, die Zytologie mit molekularer Kern- und Protoplasmaforschung. Der Entwicklungsphysiologe, seiner Bestimmung nach gehalten, zur Aufklärung von Vorgängen der organismischen Entwicklung nicht nur die ihm gerade faßbare Ebene des Keimgeschehens, sondern gleichzeitig dessen Vergangenheit und Zukunft mit in den Blick zu nehmen, ergriff begierig die vielen Moglichkeiten, die diese aufblühenden Wissenschaftszweige boten, um real ins Submikroskopische und Molekulare vorzudringen.
