    ISBN: 9781118669631 , 1118669630 , 9783642524523 , 3642524524
Series Statement: Lecture notes on coastal and estuarine studies ; 22
Content: This proceedings of a workshop held at the Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies, California, in April, 1986, combines the information on modeling, satellite imagery, experimental hydrodynamics and field observations, active migrations and larval transport, distribution and transformation of stable isotopes, ecosystem budgets, and sedimentology, all towards understanding movements and exchange of all kinds of matter between adjoining waters. The organizers of the meeting (SCOR Working Group 65) assessed the extent of knowledge regarding the interdependence of adjoining coastal and offshore waters, to see how they contribute to, and benefit from, each other's nutrient supply and biological productivity. A summary chapter discusses present gaps in our knowledge, concepts for future research, and major difficulties in quantifying the total mass of matter exchanged between adjoining bodies of water.
Note: Includes index. , Water exchange. Inshore/offshore water exchange in shallow coastal systems / J Dronkers -- Coastal/offshore water exchange in narrow, deep shelf areas / TA McClimans -- Satellite remote sensing for estimating coastal offshore transports / U Horstmann -- Mass balance studies. The use of stable isotope ratios for tracing the nearshore-offshore exchange of organic matter / JN Gearing -- Tidal flat areas / H Postma -- Patterns of organic carbon exchange between coastal ecosystems the mass balance approach in salt marsh ecosystems / Charles S Hopkinson -- Coupling of mangroves to the productivity of estuarine and coastal waters / Robert R Twilley -- Production and transport of organic matter in mangrove-dominated estuaries / Proserpina L Gomez -- Energy flow through fjord systems / TH Pearson -- Mass balance in coral reef-dominated areas / SV Smith -- Riverine C, N, Si And P transport to the coastal ocean: an overview / David H Peterson, Stephen W Hager, Laurence E Schemel, Daniel R Cayan -- Active transport. Fish migrations between coastal and offshore areas / JJ Zijlstra -- Larval transport in coastal crustacea: three case histories / Peter C Rothlisberg -- Transport of crab larvae between estuaries and the continental shelf / Charles E Epifanio -- Numerical modelling. Coupling of hydrodynamic and ecosystems modelling applied to tidal estuaries / RJ Uncles -- Coastal-offshore interactions. An evaluation of presented evidence / B-O Jansson, AD McIntyre, SW Nixon, MM Pamatmat, B Zeitzschel, JJ Zijlstra -- Subject index.
