Dieser Band ist die erste deutsche Übersetzung eines der vielen Bücher des bekannten Autors über Zahlentheorie. Das vor 2 Jahren erschienene englische Orginal, eine alles Wesentliche enthaltende kürzere Fassung des Standardwerks "The New Book of Prime Number Records", wurde hier aktualisiert, insbesondere mit den jüngsten Rechenrekorden. Das Werk bietet einen Einblick in die Entwicklung von Eratosthenes bis zur neuesten Zeit mit einer Fülle von interessanten und oft weniger bekannten Einzelergebnissen. Aussagen, die sich auf tiefer liegende algebraische oder analytische Methoden stützen, werden nur referiert, aber dabei doch plastisch und verstehbar. Ein fast 50 Seiten umfassendes Literaturverzeichnis listet gezielt sowohl alle passenden Lehrbücher als auch die meisten Orginalpublikationen, Webseiten eingeschlossen, auf. Der sehr ansprechend formulierte Text kann in Auszügen bereits von interessierten Schülern gelesen werden, ist aber auch für Kenner noch eine Fundgrube. (2 S) (Wolfgang Grölz)
