Henriette Herz, sprachbegabte Schriftstellerin und Inhaberin eines führenden Berliner Literarischen Salons zur Zeit der Frühromantik. Sie war mit dem Arzt und Schriftsteller Markus Herz verheiratet. Henriette Herz stammte aus einer bekannten jüdischen Arztfamilie in Berlin und wurde vor allem in verschiedenen Sprachen sehr gut ausgebildet. Im Alter von 12 Jahren wurde sie mit dem älteren Arzt Marcus Herz verlobt und zwei Jahre später verheiratet. Durch die Gründung und Führung eines der bekanntesten literarischen Salons (1780-1803) erwarb sich Henriette Herz unschätzbare Verdienste. Zunächst empfing ihr Ehemann hochgestellte Gäste aus Politik und Kultur, während Henriette in einem Nebenzimmer ein Frauenkränzchen abhielt, das dann einen Tugendbund zur "Pflege der Freundschaft" gründete und sich vorwiegend mit den Sturm-und-Drang-Werken Goethes beschäftigte. Damit wurde der Grundstein zum Goethekult gelegt. Aus diesen beiden Zirkeln entwickelte sich der führende Berliner Salon, in dem neben Politikern, Wissenschaftlern und bildenden Künstlern bedeutende Literaten und Philosophen verkehrten, z. B. die Brüder Alexander und Wilhelm von Humboldt, Clemens Brentanos Frau Sophie Mereau-Brentano, Karl Philipp Moritz, Friedrich Gentz, Jean Paul, Rahel Levin (spätere Varnhagen) und Friedrich Ernst Daniel Schleiermacher. Friedrich Schlegel begegnete hier Dorothea Veit, die später seine Frau wurde. Unterschiedliche literarische Strömungen, Epochen und Gesellschaftskreise fanden hier zusammen und es war Henriette Herz" Verdienst, Kontakte und Freundschaften auch zwischen vielen deutschen und französischen Gelehrten, Künstlern und Wissenschaftlern (Mirabeau, Madame de Stael) hergestellt zu haben.1803 starb ihr Mann. Daraufhin musste sie ihre Geselligkeiten stark einschränken und sich anderen, z. B. dem Kreis um Rachel Varnhagen, anschließen. Ab 1813 unterrichtete sie nur noch mittellose Kinder, ihr Ruhm aber blieb bestehen. 1817 konvertierte sie zum Protestantismus.
