Nach Roman Jakobson begründet der Vergleich das normale und das wissenschaftliche Verständnis von literarischen Texten. Die Methode ist seit der Rhetorik unter den Stichworten "Nachahmung" und "Wettstreit" geläufig. Der Wunsch zu schreiben wird durch Geschriebenes geweckt; ohne den Vergleich mit dem Hergebrachten kann das Neue nicht beurteilt werden. Das Vergleichen begründet die Geschichte der Literatur, insofern die Schriftsteller einen Wettstreit mit ihren Vorgängern, mit einer oder mehreren Sprachen und Literaturen ausgetragen haben. Horaz hat aus dem Vergleich der lateinischen Literatur und Mentalität mit dem griechischen Vorbild literarästhetische Parameter gewonnen, die bis heute für die vergleichende Bewertung literarischer Texte angewendet werden. Vergleichende Geschmacksurteile können aber nur so lange eine Geschichte der Literatur begründen, als ein ästhetischer "Gemeinsinn" (I. Kant) der die Bildung tragenden sozialen Gruppe vorausgesetzt wird. Nachdem die Schriftsteller verkündet hatten, allein auf ihre jeweilige "Naturgabe" (I. Kant), ihren individuellen Genius als die ihr Werk bestimmende "produktive Kraft" (J. W. v. Goethe) vertrauen zu wollen, verloren auch die Leserinnen und Leser das Vertrauen in die allgemeine Gültigkeit ihrer literarästhetischen Urteile. Seit dem 19. Jahrhundert erheben die Künstler oder Dichter den Anspruch, Inhalt, Form und Wert ihrer Werke sowie die Vorbilder, mit denen sie in Wettstreit treten, selbstständig, ohne Berücksichtigung des "Gemeinsinns" zu bestimmen. Kritiker und Leser haben zunächst versucht, literarische Texte mit dem Nationalgeist oder dem 'Wahren, Schönen und Guten' zu vergleichen, um eine gewisse Übersicht in das Chaos der produktiven Kräfte zu bringen. Es wird dagegen vorgeschlagen, dass jede Autorin oder jeder Autor mit ihren jeweiligen, 'autonom' ausgewählten Vorgängern verglichen werden sollten, um sie oder ihn zu verstehen und zu bewerten.
