Virginia Woolf erzählt die "Biographie" des goldbraunen Cockerspaniels Flush aus der Perspektive des Hundes. Flush, von Lady Mitford an die kränkliche Elisabeth Barrett verschenkt, ist ein besonderer Hund. Während er seine Jugend im verhangenen Krankenzimmer der Dichterin dahinträumt, entwickelt er eine "übermäßige Empfindungsfähigkeit für menschliche Gefühle". So witterte er, als Robert Browning auftaucht, bereits im Schwingen der Stimme seiner Herrin die Gefahr für ein Liebesmonopol. Aber bald erkennt er klug, daß er nicht die eine lieben und den anderen beißen kann, zumal nun die wirklichen Abenteuer seines Lebens beginnen. Er brennt mit den beiden Jungvermählten nach Italien durch und wird in Rom, Venedig und Florenz zum weltgewandten Hund. Die Biographie eines sehr weisen Hundes, der nach einem "genossenen Leben"" im traumlosen Schlaf des hohen Alters stirbt, ist zugleich eine Biographie seiner Herrin Elisabeth Baret-Browning, der größten englischen Dichterin des 19. Jahrhunderts.
