Der französische Philosoph Finkielkraut (zuletzt ID 26/89) möchte ergründen, warum im 20. Jahrhundert trotz Aufklärung, Liberalismus und gewaltiger Anstrengungen, die Menschheit von ihren Ketten zu befreien, die Menschlichkeit auf der Strecke blieb. Er sucht Hilfe bei Philosophen und Intellektuellen - u.a. bei Montaigne, Montesquieu, Furet, Levi-Strauss, H. Arendt, Serres - und läßt einzelne Stationen der letzten Jahrzehnte Revue passieren, mit unverkennbar pessimistisch-resignativem Unterton. Für den Autor heißt heute die Alternative: Tourismus oder Barbarei, wobei ersterer in den Rang des höchsten Gutes getreten ist. Eigenwillige, spannende, nicht unproblematische Gedankengänge, doch nicht jeder Querdenker dürfte sich von Finkielkrauts Unkenrufen entmutigen lassen. (3) (Ursula Homann)
