Einleitend werden einige geophysikalische Prozesse, die Vulkane und Erdbeben auslösen, auf der Grundlage der Plattentektonik anschaulich erklärt. Es folgt eine Darstellung der wichtigsten Vulkan- bzw. Erdbebengebiete der Erde. Zu jeder Region sind in einer Tabelle wichtige Ereignisse aufgelistet. Übersichtliche Karten und anschauliche Blockbilder sowie Fotos erläutern die geologische Situtaion. Besonderheiten wie Bedeutung für die Forschungsgeschichte, Mythen oder historische Augenzeugenberichte ergänzen die Ausführungen. Daneben werden auch Hinweise auf Nutzung der Erdwärme, erdbebensicheres Bauen, Erschließung für den Tourismus und die Vorhersage von Ereignissen gegeben. Enthält ein kurzes Glossar. Das ausführliche Ortsregister (mit Symbolen) ermöglicht das rasche Auffinden eines gesuchten Ortes. Ein zusätzliches Sachregister wäre wünschenswert. Überall einsetzbar.
