Ihr gelingt es, die zahlreichen Widersprüche des Menschen Sylvia Plath sichtbar zu machen: die unbewältigten Kindheitsängste ausgehend vom frühen Tod des Vaters, die versteinerten gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse der fünfziger Jahre in den Vereinigten Staaten und damit verbunden die Suche nach Bestätigung als Frau, Ehefrau und Mutter. Gleichzeitig werden auch Sylvia Plaths unerhörter Ehrgeiz als Studentin, ihr Ringen um Anerkennung und Perfektion als Schriftstellerin und nicht zuletzt ihr Konkurrieren mit ihrem damals bereits als Lyriker erfolgreichen Ehemann Ted Hughes deutlich.
